Trauma Informed Practice for Attorneys

A trauma-informed approach in legal practice can reduce re-traumatization of victims, provide recognition on the role trauma plays in the lawyer-client relationship and provide legal professionals with the opportunity to increase connections to their clients and improve advocacy. When children who have experienced trauma receive support and advocacy early on, the cycle of abuse and neglect can be prevented for the next generation. This training covers the following objectives:

  1. Define trauma and identify possible responses a client who has experienced trauma might exhibit.
  2. Identify at least four trauma-informed techniques attorneys can implement in their practice to increase better case outcomes while reducing additional harm to the client.
  3. Identify how understanding trauma helps build a more effective attorney-client relationship and enhances the attorney’s representation.
  4. Review select Kentucky Rules of Professional Conduct.
  5. Analyze how trauma informed practice enhances compliance with select Kentucky Rules of Professional Conduct.
